Milk cable car

About us

This "milk carrier" was designed in 1893 by a small Jura company in Saint-Lamain, to lower the milk cans (bouilles à lait) from the day's two milkings for Comté cheese production, from the hamlet of Chaumois-Boivin to the village of Blois-sur-Seille, where the cheese dairy was located. Five hundred meters of cable and two hundred meters of ascent. No motor: the gondola with the full balls went down, and the empty balls went back up. A simple, ingenious mechanism kept it running from 1893 until the dairy closed in 1982.
