A rich historical heritage
The castle ruins are perched on the Côte de l'Heute. The date of construction is not known. It is first mentioned in 1172.
Many villages depended on the seigneury of Mirebel. The1st known lord is Gérard de Vienne, contemporary of Philippe Auguste (1165-1223),1st king of France to bear this title. In 1558, the castle was still used as a lookout post and may have had a military role. In 1595, Henry IV's troops probably ruined the tower, which had remained standing until then.
Since then, the ruins have passed from owner to owner, always in the hands of the Chalon-Arlay family, Princes of Orange, until the commune of Mirebel acquired them in 2002. The château was listed as a Historic Monument in 2007.

Mirebel church, with its remarkable lava roof, was listed as a Monument Historique in 1939. In the 12th century, a castral chapel existed at "MIREBEL EN MONTAGNE" on the mountain south of the fortified castle, in honor of Saint André. By the 15th century, it had become the present-day parish church, following enlargement of the nave and bell tower. The stone altar dates from the 16th century.
On a rocky spur on the Côte de l'Heute, a statue of Notre Dame du Guet was probably erected around 1860. An oratory to Our Lady has existed since 1838: "A Marie-notre espérance-Gloire et Amour-passant à genoux-Ave Maria".
Two beautiful identical fountains dating back to 1813, a chapel in the village dating back to 1931, 4 calvaries including a stone one dating back to 1828, a stone tuyé: an exception on the Premier Plateau dating back to 1753, and also the old PLM (Paris-lyon-Méditerranée) railroad line, which runs through the Combe d'Ain with some beautiful remains.
